These two treat hair loss differently, and many people end up using both together:
Minoxidil (topical, applied to the scalp) — widens blood vessels and prolongs the hair growth phase. Available over-the-counter in most countries. Works for both men and women.
Finasteride (oral tablet) — blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT, addressing one of the root hormonal causes of pattern hair loss. Prescription-only, primarily used by men.
Minoxidil is typically the lower-risk starting point since it's topical and non-hormonal. Finasteride can be more effective for genetic hair loss but carries a small risk of side effects some men should discuss with a doctor first. Neither works overnight — consistent use for at least 3-6 months is needed to judge results.
