Yes, in most cases. The most common form of hair loss — androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss) — has a strong genetic component. It's linked to inherited sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone that can shrink hair follicles over time.

Genetics can come from either side of the family, not just your mother's side — that's a common myth. Having a family history increases your likelihood of experiencing pattern hair loss, but the exact age of onset and severity vary a lot between individuals.

Other types of hair loss (stress-related, nutritional, autoimmune like alopecia areata) are not primarily hereditary and have different causes.
